I once went to a presentation given by two speakers. The first speaker was a PhD from a well known university. He said little about his training, and "assumed" that the title "Dr. Smith" (not his real name!) would give him all the credibility he needed. The topic was computer aided design, and graphics for digital art careers. He threw out all kinds of words like splines and nurbs and Beziers, but came off as completely out of touch with the audience: digital artists seeking to turn very powerful portfolios into paying projects and jobs.
The second speaker began by apologizing that he didn't have any formal education. Then, he quietly sat aside and played a short slide presentation. The presentation showcased a lifetime of certifications-- certificates from several Art Institutes, Lynda.com, Microsoft, Autodesk, Phoenix State University, a dozen local community colleges from across the Country, ITT, Shader Joe's, Full Sail, Oracle, Penn Foster, Kaplan... a full 10 minutes of astonishing accomplishments.
You can imagine the difference. Who do you think we all wanted to talk to after the presentations, about REAL WORLD INCOME, CAREERS, PROJECTS and JOBS?? The PhD left quietly out a back door.
That's the problem with $60,000 "degrees" today compared to a collection of $100 to $500 Certs-- IT IS THE CERTS THAT PAY OFF IN STARTING BUSINESSES, REAL JOBS, REAL PROJECTS, REAL CLIENTS AND REAL INCOME!!
Certs hang on the wall of your store or studio or lab or shop-- showing your SPECIFIC SKILLS in SPECIFIC AREAS! Not some ego oriented "degree" showing all general education and no specific skills. The average MIT Master's Degree IT grad can't get a job today without Microsoft certification! The average MBA or PhD in Finance can't sell you a single share of stock without Series 7 Certification. The average math PhD can't succeed in actuarials without passing at least three association certifications!
"How do I use my Certifications?"
Don't listen to us, listen to a few real world business owners who are doing it every day:
"I combine my certifications, which hang in my gunsmithing shop, with the three major Associations I belong to on my business card after my name. I have my "glory wall" and though I joke about it with the customers, I notice they spend a LOT of time reading the specific areas in which I'm certified. A cert that says '1911 Customizing' isn't important to anyone-- except the customer who wants to spend $2,000 on a custom 1911!"
"I'm kind of a hypocrite. I keep telling my kids to finish school and go to college, when I realize that success has nothing to do with that. Now that most High Schools have "eliminated" classes like art, shop and many sports, the kids are stuck doing math all day-- with NO practical applications. I'm an Engineer with a Masters, but my certifications in AutoCad, Maple, Mathcad and many specialized fields are what got me out of a dead end corporate job into my own design business. No one cares about the degrees! They care about the specific skills you are certified in and the associations to which you belong."
"The groups that have issued me my certifications have done far more than send me pieces of paper that show I know an area. They have gotten me obsessed with learning more, getting more certs, and engaging in lifelong learning. This is a buzzword, but I now know what it means. There are so many wonderful tutorials on the web-- the best ARE the ones that celebrate your completion and achievement. They aren't about ego, they are about discussing those topics with my friends and customers-- which has brought me more inspiration, business, income and satisfaction than 1,000 "degrees" from some renowned college."
"I have a Masters in GPS information systems from a good school, and was pursuing my PhD online. After spending nearly $40,000, the Community College I was teaching at told me that a high paying job I just missed required a certificate in Meteorology available at a local airport FBO school for $300! They then told me that the online PhD from (name removed), even though they are the largest online school in the world, meant literally nothing to my career! I'm a believer in certificates, even though I'm from traditional schools and teach at one."
"My certs were only the beginning. With them, I got my business license, can now buy wholesale from a host of suppliers, got bonded, easily passed, tested, or certed out of the association AND State exams, get referrals from many school networks, and most importantly, impressed my investors and customers enough to invest in my business so I now am a CEO with only a GED of "formal" education. It IS the certs that matter today! Every kid in High School needs to know this secret of secrets to REAL world success, not the success of professors that have never had to make a living outside their "tenure." The Government keeps talking about technology education-- it's happening at Lynda.com and other online schools and tutorial providers, NOT the colleges they keep supporting with our tax dollars! Wake up!"
